Is it selling? Recruiting? Presenting?
How about Planning, time management, or goal-setting?
All of these are excellent skills to have but they are not the single best skill you can have. That title belongs to the skill of listening. Perhaps you never even thought of listening as a skill. After all you were born with the ability to listen weren’t you? Well sort of. You were born with the gift of hearing which allows you to develop the ability to listen, but make no mistake about it, listening is a skill that needs to be developed and practiced.
I have trained thousands of people in Corporate America and many more in Network Marketing and I can tell you first hand that most people have little understanding of how to be highly effective in this precious skill. How can this be? Simple. Listening is not taught in the educational systems.
The Most Important Thing in Your Day to Day Work is the People You Interact With
Think about it this way. Imagine that everyone you come into contact with has a little sign hanging around their neck that says “Make Me Feel Important.” The number one way you do that is show interest in them and what they care about. And the number one way you do that is to listen to them.
People in general are starved for attention. When you take the time to listen to them you are one of the few people doing this. One significant thing that happens is that they believe that you understand them and their situation. Do you think this is valuable?
Oh Yeah, this is hugely important. Because when you begin to share your products and business with them from the perspective of understanding them, and they BELIEVE you understand them, they are much more likely to then believe that what you have to offer is a good fit for them.
