Creating a strong community for your organization is one of the most important things you can do as your business grows.
Always remember that people in general are loyal to people. Not products. Not money. The community component of your work is vital and as my mentor Ray Higdon says it’s “retention steroids.” In fact, a great community environment actually helps duplication because it becomes something that your organization wants to invite people into. And how to people get to be in the community? By using your products and/or joining your team.
The three over-arching things you are offering to people are the solutions of your product/service, the solutions of your income opportunity, and the tremendous environment of a network marketing community. Which, when done right, is one of the best communities anyone could ever be a part of.
So How do You Make it an Awesome Place?
Well, there are many aspects of doing this that include support, education, inspiration, personal development, and any other value you might contribute. But for the purpose of this article, I am focusing on the most important part. The Heart of the community.
This comes from the top down. The leadership sets the stage for this. It’s so crucial to remember that there is always a balance between the work and the relationships. Any organization that gets out of balance in one direction or the other will have problems above and beyond the normal challenges that come in any group. You want to create an environment where everyone feels welcome.
Respect for Everyone and Their Goals and Purpose is Paramount
Regardless of someone’s level of desire for success, they should feel that the community is right for them. I’m going to give you three key things to do right now and then the video will share a few more important and valuable nuggets.
- Love the People Regardless of their level of activity at a given time. Life happens to all of us. Everyone in your community struggles with things and at times goes through major life challenges that slow their efforts. You need to support them through these times, not make them feel bad for not performing. If you love them they will stay and when things get better for them, they will re-engage. If you make them feel bad, they will leave and never come back as they will believe that you only value them as long as they are producing and not as a human being.
- Promote and Celebrate the Small Wins. You will have some significant players who are your top producers. It is certainly important to recognize them. But if you only recognize the big hitters, everyone else, which is the majority, will feel they don’t belong. Celebrate the small triumphs. Mary sponsored her first person. Bob got his first customer. This makes everyone feel special.
- Value Everyone’s Goals. Everyone comes to your community for their own reasons. Those are the reasons that are important, not just the big goals. Show appreciation and support for everyone and you will have a strong, vibrant community. Some people are only in the organization because they want to be a part of the cool community!
If you set the tone for the community this way, you will foster an attractive, welcoming environment that fits everyone. People will stay with you. If they do not feel welcome or appreciated, I promise you they will leave and look for a community that welcomes them for who they are.
In the video I share some other important points, including a really valuable one about jobs. This would be a really good one to share, since many people in leadership don’t quite understand this and are hurting themselves and others!
