How Often Do You Struggle With Fear When You are Prospecting?
You aren’t alone. MOST everyone struggles with this. I know I did for a long time. Especially being someone with a low self-opinion and big fear of rejection. I can remember all my internal dialogue…
What if I can’t answer a question?
What if they criticize me or make fun of me?
What if they say no?
What if I say the wrong thing?
What is the exact right thing to say to this person so they will be interested?
Why would they listen to me?
This list could go on, and I’m sure you can add your own scary questions from the conversations that go on in your head!
The Problem is the Focus…
Consider these questions for a second….who are they about? They are about me and you. They are about what could happen to us! What if we considered for a second that our decision to make a contact could change their life? This one shift in thinking can make a huge difference. It’s not our job to actually change someone’s life. It’s simply our job to offer someone the opportunity to take a step, and if they do we will then help them in anyway we can.
Change From Selfish to Selfless
You see, if we choose not to contact someone because of fear, we are actually behaving in a selfish way. We are focused completely on ourselves. Would you deprive someone you loved of information that could help them if you had it? No. You would just share it and let whatever happens happen. This is the same mentality you have to take in prospecting.
Change your focus to what it could do for them if they take action. You are simply giving a gift (you do feel this way about your products and opportunity don’t you?). It is a selfless act when you are totally focused on what your gift might do for the other person.
When you believe in what you have to offer and you do it in a nice, honest, and respectful way, allowing the person to comfortably say no to you at any time, most of your prospecting calls will be enjoyable regardless of the outcome. When you occasionally run into the nasty person, and you will, who’s problem is that? Not YOURS!
