“I can honestly say that I have never gone into any business purely to make money-if that’s the sole motive-then you are better off not doing it. A business has to be involving, it has to be fun.” Richard Branson (taken from “The Entrepreneur Roller Coaster” by Darren Hardy)
What a concept huh? Would you ever imagine someone who has done such immense projects and built multiple multi billion dollar businesses would use the word fun as a basis to doing business? That is a lesson to everyone.
You have to have fun building your business. If you are not, then that warrants a step back to assess what you are doing and how you are doing it. For clarification, this doesn’t mean that every second is pure joy. There is nothing that is fun all the time, especially when it comes to a business. There will always be aspects of the work that are less fun than others, and there will be struggles that aren’t a whole lot of fun either.
The basic premise of how you work though should be fun. Stress, anxiety, pressure…..no fun no fun no fun. If you are in a circumstance where someone is putting that on you, then you should stand up and politely tell them to shove off. If you are doing that to yourself, then I suggest you take a step back and look at how you are working.
There Are Always Parts of Anything You Love Which Aren’t Fun
There are always parts of the process that may be less fun than others, but there are always ways to get your mindset right such that you are having fun. For example, in my case, prospecting in any fashion was not much fun for me when I got started. So I developed a style that was comfortable for me and the person I was prospecting, and in addition, I got to the place where I understood not everyone would be interested, so I simply had fun nicely talking to everyone I could put on a list to find the ones who wanted what I was offering. This made it fun (this is part of what you get in the free download on the right of this page…the phrases I used for years to make it fun and easy, if you haven’t downloaded them make sure you do!).
A separate example shows you that occasionally you take one for the team so you can better serve everyone. Years ago, I taught myself the hardest least fun things for me to do…cold calling, and cold walk and talk. I did them, and suffered through it, so I could learn to do it, so that I could teach authentically. Once I mastered it, and I did master it, I never did it purposefully again. Because it’s not fun for me. However, it is fun for the personality types that like this, so now I can teach it!
Fun is attractive. You have to have fun in the work and then others will say to you, “hey, I want to know what you are doing that seems to be so much fun!” Tune into my Facebook lives (on my fan page) or attend one of my live trainings and you will see a guy having more fun than you can believe. That’s why I do this. That’s why I teach. It is absolutely joyful for me!
In this video I give you a little deeper dive on the topic. So go ahead and watch it and have fun!
