What Do You Think About You?
Talk about a “can of worms” question!
To be clear, this question isn’t about how you look, or how much income you make, or what your job title is, or your standing in your community.
Those are surface things. They have nothing to do with defining you as a human being. They may have a bit to do about how someone else may define you, but let’s be real. Those things aren’t you.
All of those surface things can be changed by you. And all WILL change in some way whether you try to change them or not.
The deeper question has to do with your mindset about yourself, and ultimately affects how you approach life. Mindset is defined as “The established set of attitudes held by someone.”
Here are Some Questions That are More Reflective of What You Might Think…
Do you think you deserve good things to happen in your life?
Do you think you are worthy of being loved?
Do you think there is a purpose for your life?
Do you think you have value?
Do you think you can achieve high goals?
Do you believe you can make a difference in the world?
I could write these questions until my fingers fall off. They all come back to how you see the world and your ability to make an impact for the betterment of yourself, the people you love, and the world around you.
The Single Most Important Thing to Work on in Your Life is Your Mindset
Why is this true?
Because it will govern the decisions you make proactively, then it will govern how you proceed, and how long you will persist, in whatever you go after.
No amount of training or education or support will overcome a poor mindset. If you don’t think you deserve to accomplish the thing you are going after, or you don’t believe it’s possible for “someone like you” to accomplish something, you WON”T.
I know this intimately.
I have dealt with a poor self-image and low self-esteem my entire life. For the first part of my life, it led to consistent failure, self-loathing, negative self-talk, difficulties in love relationships, self-medication, and generally quitting everything.
In addition to this, I struggle with depression and anxiety. I never know how I will wake up in the morning. Most days I wake up as “Eeyore” and other days I wake up as “Tigger.” This is just how my brain chemicals are hardwired. But I don’t allow them to dictate my day. Without working on my mindset, I shudder to think where I might be in my life right now.
You see, I’ve learned that those “feelings” of negativity towards self are not necessarily the truth. They are simply feelings grounded in whatever mechanisms in my life that generated them. By working on my mindset, I can choose to think differently than I feel. And that makes the difference. And you can too.
Ever Feel Like Quitting?
If you are honest, the answer is YES. You feel it all the time in everything that matters. If you have a wonderful love relationship, I guarantee you that there have been many times you felt like quitting. Getting in shape? Building a business? Working on something, anything, that is challenging you?
You feel like quitting all the time.
Do you? This is where the mindset comes in. When you work on your mindset, strengthen it, develop it, nurture it, and then apply it, you will feel the desire to quit when the going gets tough, but then you will go forward ANYWAY. And here’s the cool thing…THIS improves your mindset!
Take it from me. This is the story of my life. And it’s likely the story of yours too.
How Do You Work on This?
Invest in yourself. You have to prove to yourself that you are worthy of working on. In my book 3 Circles Living, I give you blueprints for this from my experience and from the people I have mentored, coached, and trained over the past few decades.
There is nothing more important than investing in yourself, because you are a unique and wonderfully made person who has a contribution that only you can make, A contribution to the people you love, the community you live in, the vocation you are drawn to, and the world in general. You are not here without purpose, even if you don’t know what that purpose is yet.
You have to work on your mindset, so that whatever you want/need to do, you will see it through. In the video below, I talk about mindset in light of being healthy. If this is an area you struggle with, it may be helpful for you.
