What do All These Famous People Have in Common?
Thomas Edison, Jennifer Aniston, Charles Schwab, Nikola Tesla, Stephen Spielberg, Jules Verne, Pablo Picasso, Steve Jobs, Anthony Hopkins, and Alexander Graham Bell.
They all have (had) dyslexia. And by the way, this is a tiny portion of the list of people of note, who have dealt with this issue.
So What Does This Have to Do With You and Building a Business?
A whole lot.
It took me a long time to discover this lesson, so I am excited that I can short cut this learning for you. Because this is powerful.
Malcom Gladwell’s book David and Goliath (which I encourage you to read) does a masterful job of unveiling the truth that your disadvantage in life is actually an advantage in the big picture. One of the examples he uses is the learning challenge of dyslexia. Dyslexia is a significant disadvantage in traditional learning, yet, a higher percentage of people with this challenge go on to accomplish something significant than the percentage of the normal population.
Why would this be true?
It’s really simple. Dyslexics are used to things being hard. Just making it through the basic education system is very difficult for them. As a result, when they begin on a path to accomplish something, the things that someone else might consider hard, is normal for them. They are conditioned to work through difficulty.
Everything of Value to You Will Have Difficult Times
Will you have difficult times in building a business? Of course you will. Do you also have aspects of your situation that you see as disadvantages? I would bet you do.
When I started in the direct sales industry, I had no money, and I was an introvert. Are they disadvantages? I certainly saw them as such. But ultimately these disadvantages proved to be advantages (I had several others too!), because they made me work harder, learn more, and become better.
This is exactly what your perceived disadvantages are doing for you. As you work through them, they are helping you to become better as a person. they are helping you develop a powerful and inspiring story. They are conditioning you to be a resilient.
They are what is called a Blessing in Disguise.
I understand if you aren’t jumping for joy because you have your set of challenges. Neither was I! But I am thankful now for them and eventually you will be too. This video will share more insight into the topic.
