How’s Your Quality of Life?

Recently, I looked up the definition for “quality of life” and this is what it said:

“The standard of health, comfort, and happiness experienced by an individual or group.”

That definition is lacking in my opinion. Standard of happiness? What the heck is that? Standard of comfort? Sorry…that’s a terrible indicator. In fact, if we look at that one specifically, I can tell you unequivocally that someone who is super “comfortable” is eventually going to be MISERABLE.

You can’t be comfortable and have an awesome life at the same time. I’m not saying you can’t have some comfort; I’m just being real…the more comfortable you are, the less you are challenging yourself and growing. That is a one-way trip to an awful quality of life, and underscores what I am about to say next.

I believe most people would have a hard time answering this question accurately, because they would have no real idea how to define it or discern it. It’s nebulous for most, because it is often associated with how we are “feeling” about our general state of things.

And we all know deep down that “feelings” are not indicators of truth. For example…you can be a terrific human being and feel badly about yourself…actually a high percentage of terrific people fit this example. Feelings are signals, but not necessarily indicative of facts.

The Good News is That Quality of Life IS Measurable.

Several years ago, I figured this one out. That doesn’t mean I have ALL the answers, but I definitely have some of them, and I DO know a lot of the QUESTIONS.

There are specifically seven aspects that I have identified, that combined will give you a very clear picture of your true quality of life (I define all seven in the video).  That doesn’t mean there aren’t more for some people, but I can tell you with great certainty that if you measure these seven, you’ll clearly see why you feel certain ways about your life, and also be able to specifically work on each aspect.

The 3 Circles are a simple place to start, and the seven aspects will ultimately fit inside of them in some way, as they are ultimately connected to them.

But for this quick article, think about the basics of the three. How are you doing in your health, your love life, and your career, relative to how you would like to be doing? And the last part of this question is a big part of the question. Most things are relative.

My level of satisfaction with my health may be different from yours, as might be satisfaction with a relationship. In fact, we could have very similar situations, and have completely different levels of satisfaction at the same time. The career/money circle wildly fluctuates from person to person because values play such a large role in determining our perspective. Two people can have the same income, and one is ecstatic and the other feels like a failure. Some people are only satisfied with a certain title or position, while others could not care any less.

The point is what is the truth for YOU. As you think about what you want to improve in your life going forward, start with where you are in your health journey (physical and mental), where you are in your most important relationships, and where you are in your career, and then as you face these truths, begin to take the small steps to make them better. Then take all seven together (from the video) to round them out, and you’ll be very encouraged by how things will begin to shift as you go forward.
