Have You Ever Had a “Pointless” Conversation with Yourself?
These are the times when you might be feeling like whatever you do doesn’t really matter, or YOU don’t really matter. Or, like there is some longing you can’t figure out. Or, it might be a feeling of emptiness, a touch of hopelessness, maybe some despondency.
This is not to be a bummer. This is just getting real. We all have been in this place more than a time or two.
This is the place when you say things to yourself like “Is this all there is?” “What’s the point?” “Why bother?” And the like.
This may seem counterintuitive, but these are important and valuable moments.
These moments can be triggers for wonderful positive change, if we will take the time to start digging down to find what’s missing, as opposed to looking for some form of self-medication to distract us or numb us.
Having Spent a Few Decades of My Life in This Place I Know How to Wipe This Out of the Thought-Life.
It’s now been at least 20 years since I felt like that because I discovered some fundamental truths that changed everything and, one in particular that makes it simple. (You get a lot of context here, and ideas for what I’m sharing in my book 3 Circles Living)
I was reminded of this in some reading I was doing a few days ago and that’s what spurred me to share this in the hopes it will help you.
John Maxwell says that everyone has three fundamental needs:
To Believe…as in have faith in something or someone
To Belong…as in family and community
To Become…as in to grow, stretch, and reach their potential.
You will get no argument from me on any of these three. I know he’s right. For the purposes of this message, the focus is on the last one.
The More You Become the Highest Version of Yourself, The Clearer Purpose Becomes Too.
It’s ingrained in our being to become the best version of ourselves possible. Not solely for our gain, but so we can fulfill our purpose of making our unique contribution to the greater good of others.
We have to do this ourselves. Jim Rohn said, “with the accumulated value of our skill and talents, all things become possible.”
That value comes from our own dedication to development. No one else is going to do this for us, and given that we live in, and are educated in, systems that tend to suppress our uniqueness, and foster insecurity in our own view of our worth, this is an uphill climb even with dedication.
But that’s irrelevant. Everything that’s valuable to us is laced with difficulty. It’s worth it. And it’s necessary.
You might be thinking, “you don’t know me. I don’t have difference maker stuff. I don’t have gifts and talents that can make an important contribution.” In case you are…consider me standing right in front of you looking you in the eye and saying…You mean to tell me that of all the people on the planet you are the one who cannot make a difference? You were singled out? Get over the victim thinking and get to work on yourself.
Gandhi said, “if we all did what we are capable of it would suffice to solve the world’s problems.”
This is a statement that ties a bow around my entire point. You have a role to play in making the world a better place. It may be small in terms of what YOU can see, but that doesn’t change the reality of it.
Everything you do involving another human being has a ripple. And each ripple spurs more ripples. You could be a ripple that triggers a giant wave in someone else. I once heard it said that “your story can inspire a nation.” That doesn’t mean you need to be famous, it means it can touch someone who touches someone who…this is why what you do matters in the big picture.
But it’s the story of pressing through whatever you have to press through in order for you to burst from the ground and bloom, that inspires.
We are all unique and we all have something to contribute. And the more you strive forward in the development journey the closer you will get to figuring this out, while simultaneously improving all aspects of your life.
And ultimately, you will never again ask yourself any of the earlier “is this all there is?” questions, you’ll be thinking more along the lines of I can’t wait to see what happens next.
I hope this serves you immensely.
Many Blessings, Todd
P.S. I am currently deep into the initial growth stage of “Project Next.” As a result, I am no longer accepting coaching clients, as my coaching time is reserved for my expanding project team. I am still accepting certain training/speaking engagements based on timing and fit. If you are currently dissatisfied with your bigger picture progress in life and would like to learn how the project may help you move forward, send me an email and we can arrange a time to talk.
P.S.S. Want to detox, lower inflammation, rid yourself of extra body fat, and change the entire trajectory of your health in a 21-day window? If that sounds at all appealing, shoot me an email and I’ll share a very unique and effective program that has been massively successful in Europe over the past seven years and is making a significant difference for several of my clients currently. I’ll send you a program guide that will allow you to learn the details, and a link where you can move forward if you choose to. No pitch, I’m not about that. Just information that can help if you need it.
