You Cannot Do Everything All at Once.

You probably can agree with that. It’s common sense. But is it common practice?


Not unless you’re purposeful.

You see, we have a hard time letting go of stuff…people, habits, tendencies, clothes we have had in our closet for 20 years and never wear, boxes we moved from our last house that we don’t even know what’s in them….

This problem with “letting go” impacts us in every facet of life, and especially when it comes to moving forward and using our precious time in the right way.

If You are Going on a Trip, What Do You Need to Take with You?

Can you take first base with you if you are trying to run to second?


Can you keep your feet on the dock if you want to travel to the other side of the lake?


When you are about to go on a vacation, you figure out what to take. Which means you also figure out what to leave.

You certainly don’t want to pay those lovely airline fees for extra bags that you don’t actually need. That’s a cost that makes no sense to incur.

To Journey to the Life You Aspire to, You Have to Lighten the Load.

You already have a lot to do. You have a lot of things you like. And you have lots of things you’d like to do and have, and possibly be.

At the same time, you have a finite amount of time in each day and can only expend so much physical and mental energy in the day you have.

I can promise you that when you say to yourself “I don’t have time to…” you are actually not dealing with an issue of time.

You are dealing with an issue of waste.

You are wasting your time with things and people that are at cross-purpose with what’s best for you.

Are you doing this on purpose?

Absolutely not. Unless you are in such a bad place mentally in this season of your life that you are avoiding life. Which by the way, is fine for a few days.

But not as a way of being.

Usually being in a bad place mentally is BECAUSE you don’t like what’s happening in your life, and THAT is because you have likely not been putting your time to use in the best way over a longer prior season.

It’s a pretty simple equation.

How you use your time will equate to what your quality of life is going to be.

Time in the things that matter will lead to a life that feels good. And time in the things that don’t will lead to the opposite.

What to Do is Simple.

All you have to do is step off your crazy merry go-round for a short period of time.

I know. It’s scary to stop. To sit still. And just be with your deeper thoughts and feelings.

But rest assured, the world won’t fall apart because you stopped for a minute. And if it does?

Then it was already in shreds, and you were too busy to notice. Although you definitely have been feeling it.

Here’s what to reflect on when you are sitting on the time out bench next to your merry go-round:

What do I really want my life to look like? What do I truly want to have, do, and be?

You don’t even need to have total clarity on this yet. Just a general idea will do, since this will continuously evolve going forward anyway.

After all, you can only see so far in the future from your little bench of now.

You’ve got to move into the future to begin to see farther. That’s how you evolve.

Anyway, the big thing here is the next question and what you are willing to do about the answers:

What am I spending my time on that will not help me in the process of moving towards what I want?

How much time am I scrolling aimlessly on social media?

How much time am I parked on my couch in front of Netflix?

What meaningless tasks am I continuing to do that either don’t matter, or that I could have someone else do?

What people am I spending time with that are adding nothing of value to my life?

There’s more of these questions of course, and you can think of them, and I invite you to.

But here’s the point.

Once you have clarity on where your time is going and how that’s keeping you on your merry go-round, and NOT moving you closer to what’s ideal for your life…

You cut the ties.

You are the captain of your ship. Lighten the load of stuff you don’t need for the navigation your course.

And you will make the room on board for the things that will get you to your destination.

It really is this simple.
